December 04, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to move into
the final phase of privatisation, with competitive bidding scheduled for
December 23, 2025.
The update was shared by Khurram Schehzad, Advisor to the
Finance Minister.
A luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister brought together all
pre-qualified bidders, marking a significant step toward transferring
operational control of the national carrier to private investors.
The Prime Minister welcomed the investor groups and
reiterated the government’s commitment to a transparent, competitive, and
investor-friendly privatisation process.
Four financially robust consortia are now in the running to
acquire PIA. The process aims to modernize the airline, expand its fleet, and
restore service standards, while retaining the PIA brand and national identity.
Rapid route growth, improved customer service, and
operational efficiency were highlighted as key priorities for the incoming
management.
Investors were called upon to expand the fleet soon after
privatisation and restore PIA back to its glory days of Great People to Fly
With to unlock its full potential.
The bidding process will be broadcast live, underscoring the
transparency and credibility of the exercise.
This privatisation could unlock significant investment in
Pakistan’s aviation sector and improve operational efficiency, fleet
modernization, and route expansion, benefiting both domestic and international
passengers.
PIA has historically struggled with financial losses,
operational inefficiencies, and declining service quality.
Privatization, if successful, is expected to revitalize the airline and support broader economic and aviation reforms in the country.
