Nai Gaj Dam delay case adjourned till June 11

June 08, 2026 (MLN): The hearing on delays in the Nai Gaj Dam project was adjourned until June 11 by the Federal Constitutional Court after both the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and the project contractor completed their arguments.

A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court Justice Aminuddin Khan, conducted the proceedings on Monday.

During the hearing, WAPDA’s counsel stated that the original cost of the Nai Gaj Dam project was estimated at Rs26bn, according to APP.

He alleged that the contractor had already been paid an additional Rs36bn over the initial budget, while less than half of the construction work has been completed.

He also pointed out that the Sindh High Court had previously directed a timeline for completion, which was not met.

On the other hand, the contractor’s counsel, Masood Khan, argued that it had been submitted before the Supreme Court in 2019 that 50% of the project had already been completed.

He further maintained that the Supreme Court had identified funding shortages as the key reason behind the delays.

The contractor’s side also claimed that both federal and provincial authorities failed to release required funds, which significantly slowed progress.

It was added that work on the project has remained suspended since 2024 due to the non-availability of financing.

After hearing arguments from both parties, the court adjourned the case until June 11. Additional Attorney General Aamir Rehman is expected to present his arguments at the next hearing.
