Mecca Defense Pact draws growing interest from Muslim Nations

August 31, 2026 (MLN):The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement has drawn interest from six to seven Muslim-majority countries, Pakistan has confirmed, as senior diplomats from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye met in Istanbul  to discuss security and military cooperation, according to Bloomberg.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated over the weekend that relevant officials are developing a framework to facilitate accession by other countries, though he did not disclose their specific names.

Bangladesh is the latest country to express interest in joining the pact.

Signed on August 7, the pact stipulates that an armed attack against any one of the three signatory nations will be treated as an attack against all three.

The agreement comes as the three Sunni Muslim allies of the United States respond to escalating regional tensions that have seen Gulf oil-exporting states targeted by missile attacks and disruptions to energy shipments.

The three countries have expressed growing concern over the deteriorating regional security environment, including the increasingly assertive military posture of Israel and Iran, as instability continues to challenge the region.
