Kier Starmer steps down as British Prime Minister

June 22, 2026 (MLN): British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stepped down as both Labour Party leader and head of government on Monday, drawing a curtain on a turbulent tenure that began with a landslide election victory less than two years ago.

Keir Starmer made the announcement, pledging to remain in post until a leadership contest concludes to ensure a stable transition, according to CNBC.

Visibly moved, he described his arrival at Downing Street as the proudest moment of his life, and maintained that his government had restored Britain's global standing, attracted investment, and strengthened workers' rights.

He nonetheless acknowledged that Labour colleagues had grown doubtful about his ability to lead the party into the next general election.

The resignation is to end months of intensifying pressure on Keir Starmer, who faced a growing backbench rebellion following Labour's sharp losses in May's local elections.

Discontent had also been fuelled by disputes over fiscal policy, controversy surrounding welfare reforms, and the appointment of Peter Mandelson,

The departure sets off what is expected to be a competitive leadership contest.

Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who secured a commanding by-election win on June 18, is widely seen as a frontrunner for the role.

Markets showed little alarm at the news. Sterling edged 0.19% lower against the dollar to trade at $1.3207, while the yield on 10-year UK gilts held broadly steady at around 4.85%.
