October 08, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and the United Kingdom have discussed ways to further enhance trade and cooperation in priority sectors and to deliver concrete outcomes through the next bilateral Trade Dialogue, with a long-term, non-legally binding investment partnership proposed by the British side.
The talks between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal
Khan and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, held at the Ministry of
Commerce, covered healthcare and life sciences, information technology,
agriculture and livestock, financial services, aviation and minerals-related
services. Secretary Commerce Jawad Paul and senior ministry officials attended.
The proposed partnership, supported at ministerial level,
would provide a framework for cooperation in mutually agreed sectors. Potential
areas include regulatory reforms, trade facilitation, education and workforce
skills, and investment financing.
On livestock, Jam Kamal Khan noted the Prime Minister's keen
interest in strengthening the sector, improving animal productivity and
increasing value addition and meat exports.
He pointed to opportunities for British expertise,
technology and investment to support modern livestock practices and stronger
commercial linkages.
The High Commissioner stressed the need to build food safety
and regulatory requirements into sector development so Pakistani producers can
access UK and other international markets, according to the press release.
The Minister also emphasized stronger international branding
of Pakistani products. Discussions covered promoting pink salt, olive oil, food
products, textiles and surgical instruments through quality assurance, value
addition and effective marketing.
Both sides recognized the potential for Pakistani businesses
to develop their own brands and capture greater value from products already
supplied to international markets, and discussed expanding the presence of
Pakistani food businesses and restaurant brands in the UK.
In aviation, the British side briefed the Minister on
engagement involving Airbus and Rolls-Royce, including potential aircraft and
engine arrangements for PIA and possible export credit support.
Aircraft leasing was discussed as a way to meet immediate
fleet requirements while longer-term procurement options are considered.
The Minister said PIA's direct international routes offer an
important commercial advantage, and stressed improved service standards,
reliability and fleet modernization to rebuild passenger confidence.
The High Commissioner acknowledged Pakistan's ongoing
economic reform efforts, including regulatory and tax reforms.
The Minister highlighted tariff rationalization as an
important step towards improving competitiveness, widening access to inputs and
encouraging investment.
Cooperation in Islamic finance was also explored, including
strengthening financial links with the Pakistani diaspora in the UK.
On minerals, the Minister highlighted the need for
experienced technical partners, professional exploration services and joint
ventures to build domestic capabilities.
The British side identified potential contributions in
legal, financial, insurance and other services supporting the sector, and
expressed interest in facilitating UK business participation in the planned
minerals conference.
Looking ahead to Pakistan's 80th anniversary in 2027, both
sides discussed using the milestone to showcase Pakistan's products, economic
opportunities and areas of bilateral cooperation through business, education
and cultural engagements.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination to develop
practical proposals and advance preparations for the next Trade Dialogue.
