August 18, 2026 (MLN): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
government has called for the early execution of the Chashma Lift Canal
Project, terming it a long-standing demand of the province's people and a
scheme of national importance for Pakistan's agricultural and economic
development.
The matter was discussed during a meeting between
Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, Federal Secretary for Climate
Change and Water Resources, Owais Manzoor Sumra, and Additional Secretary,
Ministry of Water Resources, Mehr Ali Shah, APP reported.
The meeting reviewed the Chashma Lift Canal Project
alongside other ongoing water sector initiatives and water-related issues
facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Governor Kundi maintained that the Chashma Lift Canal
Project should be launched without further delay, noting that its completion
would not only benefit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also contribute significantly to
the country's agricultural growth and economic prosperity.
The participants also exchanged views on the Kachi Canal
Project and went over proposals aimed at the efficient use of water resources,
water conservation, and addressing future water challenges facing the country.
The Governor said an important event on the Indus Waters
would be organised at the Governor House in Peshawar, where experts,
representatives of relevant institutions, and other stakeholders would be
invited to deliberate on water-related issues and explore sustainable solutions
to the challenges confronting the sector.
The meeting concluded with an agreement that ensuring
the efficient and equitable utilisation of the country's water resources was
essential for national development and the long-term stability of the
agricultural sector, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to working
together on the province's outstanding water issues.
