February 06, 2026 (MLN): K-Electric Chief Executive Officer Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi has resigned from his position, marking the end of one of the longest tenures at Pakistan’s largest power utility.

Sources familiar with the matter said Moonis Alvi had been under sustained mental pressure for several months amid a controversy linked to harassment allegations raised by a former senior employee.

The matter had drawn regulatory scrutiny and internal deliberations, adding to uncertainty around the company’s leadership.

He joined K-Electric in 2008 and rose through senior roles, including chief financial officer, company secretary and head of treasury, before being appointed CEO in 2018.

During his tenure, he oversaw several strategic initiatives, most notably the Roshani Baji programme, and regularly represented the utility in public and policy forums.

The controversy dates back to last year when the company’s former chief marketing and communications officer filed a complaint alleging harassment, intimidation and the creation of a hostile work environment.

The Sindh High Oversight Authority, led by retired Justice Shah Nawaz Tariq, initially ordered Alvi’s removal and imposed a penalty of Rs2.5 million.

Moonis Alvi denied the allegations and challenged the ruling. The case was later reviewed by Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori, who set aside the provincial authority’s order on July 31, 2025, citing procedural lapses and insufficient supporting evidence.

The governor’s decision noted that no formal written complaint had been submitted to the company’s internal committees and that the submitted records did not substantiate several claims.

Notably, just a few days ago, the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh’s order against the Chief Executive Officer of K-Electric was set aside, bringing a decisive close to a high-profile legal chapter that had lingered over Pakistan’s largest power utility for months.

According to sources, K-Electric’s Board Chairman Mark Gerard Skelton has approved Alvi’s resignation. A spokesperson for the company declined to confirm or deny the development.

Sources further confirmed that three candidates have been shortlisted for the chief executive role, all based in Karachi and possessing extensive experience in the energy and financial sectors.

The current board is expected to interview the candidates and forward its recommendations to the incoming board.

A meeting of K-Electric’s board of directors is scheduled for next week, while board elections are expected to take place during Ramazan. The newly constituted board will make the final decision on the appointment of the next CEO.

K-Electric’s board comprises 13 seats, though three have remained vacant for an extended period. Following his resignation, the number of serving board members has fallen to nine.

The resignation has been formally disclosed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange in line with regulatory requirements.
