February 26, 2026 (MLN): Japanese startup SkyDrive
Inc. has successfully completed the first public demonstration flight of
its “flying car” in Tokyo, which marks a major step toward its goal of
launching commercial services in Japan by 2028.
The demonstration, conducted jointly with Mitsubishi Estate
Co. and Kanematsu Corp., took place over Tokyo Bay, APP reported.
During the roughly three-and-a-half-minute flight, the
remotely operated unmanned aircraft traveled about 150 meters, showcasing its
stability and maneuverability.
The aircraft used in the test was SkyDrive’s battery-powered
SD-05 model.
Equipped with 12 rotors and designed to seat up to three
passengers, the compact vehicle has a projected flight range of 15 to 40
kilometers.
Its small size and
lightweight design allow it to land in tighter spaces than conventional
helicopters, potentially expanding the number of viable landing locations in
urban areas.
Alongside the flight, the company unveiled a dedicated
terminal for future operations.
The facility will allow operators to control and monitor
takeoffs and landings, while passengers complete check-in and security
procedures. Notably, the terminal features an automated check-in system that
uses facial recognition technology.
Flight and terminal demonstrations are scheduled to continue
through Saturday as SkyDrive refines its operations ahead of commercial
rollout.
Flying cars are widely seen as a potential solution to urban
transportation challenges such as traffic congestion and overcrowded trains.
SkyDrive previously showcased its aircraft at the World
Exposition in Osaka last year.
Looking ahead, SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said fares
could become more affordable over time.
Fukuzawa added that adoption could grow quickly due to the
aircraft’s speed advantage.
