Japan grants $16m for flood protection on Indus River in Sindh

September 07, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan and Japan has signed
the Exchange of Notes, Record of Discussion and Grant Agreement for the
"Project for Flood Protection and Dike Improvement on Indus River in Sindh
Province," aimed at strengthening flood protection infrastructure and
enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities in the province.
The Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion were
signed and exchanged by Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair
Karim Kidwai and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the
Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mr Akamatsu
Shuichi, on behalf of their respective governments, said a press release
issued.
The Grant Agreement was signed by Additional Secretary,
Ministry of Economic Affairs Ms Sabina Qureshi and Senior Representative, Japan
International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Pakistan, Mr Sugawara Takayuki.
Under the agreement, the Government of Japan is
providing a grant of JPY 2.58bn (approximately $16.4mn) for implementation of
the project, which will focus on the improvement and strengthening of the Old
Abad Bund in the Larkana area of Sindh Province, along the right bank of the
Indus River.
The secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs, expressed
appreciation to the government and people of Japan for their continued
friendship, generous development assistance and steadfast commitment to
Pakistan's socio-economic development.
He also acknowledged Japan's longstanding role as a
valued development partner and appreciated JICA's technical expertise,
knowledge and continued engagement with Pakistan across various sectors.
Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi, for his part, assured his
government's commitment to working closely with Pakistan to further strengthen
bilateral ties and cooperation, while Mr Sugawara Takayuki, Senior
Representative at JICA, appreciated the efforts of the governments of Sindh and
Pakistan in bringing the project to the signing stage, reaffirming JICA's
commitment to strengthening flood protection infrastructure in flood-prone
areas of Sindh.
