May 22, 2026 (MLN): As the festive season of Eid-ul-Adha shifts into high gear, city cattle markets have transformed into sleepless economic engines.

Beyond the buying and selling of sacrificial animals, these sprawling lots have evolved into massive, round-the-clock commercial hubs that fuel the livelihoods of thousands.

From laborers hoisting livestock to ornament peddlers and knife-sharpeners, the seasonal rush has triggered a non-stop cycle of trade.

According to market representatives, this skyrocketing demand across both urban and rural centers is breathing life into a vibrant micro-economy, APP reported.

Here is a look inside the bustling ecosystem driving the Eid livestock trade:

The Laborer's Payday

For daily wage workers and local butchers, the festive season is the ultimate financial lifeline. The physical demands of managing, loading, and slaughtering animals translate into highly lucrative, albeit exhausting, shifts.

One market laborer described the grueling, round-the-clock shifts as physically exhausting but highly rewarding.

The cash earned during this short window, he explained, is enough to keep his household afloat for months, making it the most critical earning opportunity of his year.

Freelance laborers stationed at the mandis charge between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000 just to load or wrangle a single heavy animal onto a truck. For a worker hustling 12-hour shifts, this yields a massive seasonal windfall.

Professional (and amateur) butchers wait all year for the first three days of Eid. This year, butcher syndicates in urban centers have set steep rates: Rs 6,000 for slaughtering a goat, Rs25,000 for a cow, and up to Rs50,000 for a camel, however varying on the sizes of the animal and on the days of Eid. For many of these workers, these three days generate enough income to cover household expenses for the next four to six months.

The Transport Hustle

Transporters are working in overdrive. The relentless ferrying of livestock between rural farms and city markets makes this their busiest and most profitable season. Despite the exhausting, sleepless schedules, drivers rely heavily on this seasonal boom to secure their annual income.

Livestock "Bling"

The economic ripple effect extends straight to the accessory stalls. Ornament shopkeepers are hitting peak sales, cashing in on a growing trend of customers decking out their animals with colorful garlands, brass bells, and decorative harnesses. This short, sharp spike in sales provides essential capital that sustains these small vendors year-round.

Prices for animal ornaments currently range up to Rs1,500 for goats and sheep, while decorative accessories for cows can cost as much as Rs3,000.

Blades and Bites

Ancillary services are also striking gold. Knife-sharpening wheels are spinning overtime to prepare tools for the upcoming sacrifice, generating vital household income for the craftsmen. Meanwhile, food stall operators are feeding the hordes of buyers who spend hours navigating the crowded, dusty lots, turning the festive rush into their biggest earning window of the year.

Ultimately, the pre-Eid cattle market is a masterclass in seasonal economics. Braving sweltering heat, crushing crowds, and grueling hours, a diverse army of workers and small business owners are cashing in on a fleeting yet vital window of opportunity.

It is a powerful reminder that while Eid-ul-Adha is a time of sacrifice, it is also a season of profound economic survival and growth for the working class.
