Honglian hybrid rice set to transform Pakistan’s rice production

August 12, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan could significantly raise rice yields and farmer incomes through wider adoption of Honglian-type hybrid rice, as Chinese and Pakistani researchers highlighted the crop’s potential during an international symposium in China.

The 2nd International Symposium on Improved-Variety Breeding of Honglian Type Hybrid Rice was held in Luotian, Hubei province, bringing together experts from China and Pakistan to review advances in hybrid rice research and its economic impact on farmers.

Developed by the late Wuhan University academician Zhu Yingguo, Honglian hybrid rice is one of the three major cytoplasmic male sterility systems used globally for hybrid rice breeding. The variety is known for its heat tolerance, adaptability across different environments and high-quality grain.

Qu Wenqian, Deputy Party Secretary of Wuhan University, said Honglian hybrid rice has so far generated more than RMB9 billion in direct economic benefits across China and Belt and Road partner countries.

The technology has also gained traction in Pakistan, where researchers see considerable room for expanding hybrid rice cultivation, particularly in areas facing heat, water shortages and declining soil quality.

Dr Muhammad Ashfaq of the University of the Punjab noted that coarse rice accounts for around one-third of Pakistan’s rice cultivation area, adding that production could potentially double if these areas are converted to hybrid rice cultivation.

He identified Sindh, Balochistan and southern Punjab as key regions for expanding hybrid rice and said wider adoption of Honglian varieties could substantially increase agricultural output while adding billions of rupees to farmers’ incomes and the national economy.

Pakistan-China cooperation in this field dates back to 2020, when Wuhan University and the University of the Punjab established a Joint Research Center for Honglian Type Hybrid Rice.

Following multi-location trials conducted across Pakistan’s four major rice-growing zones, nine hybrid lines were evaluated. One of them, HP4, was officially registered in Pakistan as PU-786 in 2025.

After receiving national commercial approval, PU-786 entered commercial cultivation across Pakistan in 2026. The variety has demonstrated strong heat tolerance, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptability to water-scarce conditions and degraded soils.

Chinese researchers also highlighted the strategic importance of the Luotian breeding base in maintaining seed security while supporting agricultural cooperation with international partners.

The latest developments mark a further step in Pakistan-China agricultural collaboration, with Honglian hybrid rice offering potential to improve productivity, strengthen food security and enhance the earnings of rice growers.
