Govt stresses need for water reservoirs to meet future needs

July 01, 2026 (MLN): The Government has stressed the urgent need to construct water reservoirs to address Pakistan's future water and energy challenges, warning that dams were essential to meet the growing needs of the agriculture sector, which supports nearly half of the country's population.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik, speaking to a private television channel on Tuesday, according to APP, said the construction of dams would not only enhance water storage capacity but also help generate affordable electricity, contributing to the country's energy security.

He stressed that political consensus was crucial for undertaking major dam projects across the country.

Commenting on India's reported plans to stop the flow of water to Pakistan, the minister said India could not dare block water flowing into the country.

He said the government was informing the international community about what he termed India's attempts to violate Pakistan's fundamental rights.

Pakistan would pursue the matter at all available international forums if India attempted to stop water flows, he added, reaffirming that the country was fully capable of safeguarding its rights and protecting its national interests.
