Govt signals big leap for Pakistan’s IT sector

January 12, 2026 (MLN):  The government of Pakistan has prioritized providing youth with internationally competitive education and training in the information technology sector, which aims to transform the country into a regional hub for IT and technology-driven entrepreneurship.

Special emphasis is being placed on fostering innovation and promoting entrepreneurship in the technology sector.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, while meeting the parents of late IT prodigy Arfa Karim Randhawa, Samina Amjad and Amjad Karim Randhawa, along with the Chief Executive of the Arfa Karim Foundation, Tabinda Islam, paid rich tribute to Arfa Karim.

He lauded her remarkable contributions to the IT sector at a young age and noted that the IT Tower in Lahore has been named Arfa Karim Tower in recognition of her legacy, APP reported.

The prime minister also highlighted the continuation of the laptop distribution programme to encourage high-performing male and female students and praised the establishment of the Arfa Karim Foundation as a positive step for IT development. He assured full government support at all levels.

Arfa Karim’s parents expressed their appreciation for the government’s initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to advance the IT sector in Pakistan.
