June 11, 2026 (MLN): Wheat will be supplied to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) through the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) following directives issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The decision was taken by the Ministry of National Food
Security , with the Prime Minister directing the ministry to arrange the supply
through PASSCO, according to APP.
Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer
Hussain said the move aims to protect the people of KP from the impact of
inflation.
He added that instructions have been issued to ensure the
immediate and effective supply of wheat through PASSCO, describing the
initiative as a practical step towards food security and public relief.
Meanwhile, wheat
and flour prices in Sindh came under review as the provincial government
assessed market conditions amid concerns over recent price increases and supply
chain pressures.
Representatives of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association
(PFMA), Sindh Zone, led by Chairman Junaid Aziz, highlighted disruptions in the
supply chain and market imbalances, which they said were contributing to price
volatility.
Sindh Minister for Food Makhdoom Mehboob-uz-Zaman said the
government was taking all necessary measures to ensure the availability of
affordable, quality, and sufficient flour across the province. He warned that
any attempt to create artificial inflation or hoard essential commodities would
be dealt with strictly.
He said Sindh Chief Minister had taken immediate notice of
the situation and directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive report on
wheat stocks and availability across the province.
The minister maintained that there was no shortage of wheat
or supply crisis in Sindh, alleging that certain elements were attempting to
manipulate the market and increase prices. He warned that strict legal action
would be taken against those involved in hoarding or creating artificial
shortages, adding that illegally stored wheat could be confiscated under the
law.
He further said the government was working to improve
transparency in the wheat sector, including the introduction of a digital
payment system for farmers to reduce corruption and eliminate exploitative
practices.
PFMA Sindh Zone Chairman Junaid Aziz welcomed the provincial
government's decision not to impose restrictions on wheat movement, saying the
policy had benefited farmers, growers, and the business community.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Food
Department, including the Secretary Food, Director Food, Additional Director
Food, and other relevant officers.
