June 10, 2026 (MLN): Wheat and flour prices in Sindh came under review on Tuesday as the provincial government assessed market conditions amid concerns over recent price increases and supply chain pressures.

Representatives of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA), Sindh Zone, led by Chairman Junaid Aziz, raised concerns regarding disruptions in the supply chain and resulting market imbalances, which they said were contributing to price volatility, according to APP.

Responding to the situation, Sindh Minister for Food Makhdoom Mehboob-uz-Zaman said the government was taking all necessary steps to ensure the availability of affordable, quality and sufficient flour for consumers across the province.

He warned that any attempt to create artificial inflation or hoard essential commodities would be dealt with strictly.

He stated that the Chief Minister of Sindh had taken immediate notice of the matter and directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive report on wheat stocks and availability throughout the province.

The minister maintained that there was no wheat shortage or supply crisis in Sindh, alleging instead that certain elements were attempting to manipulate the market to push prices higher and place an additional burden on consumers.

He further warned that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in hoarding or creating artificial shortages, adding that illegally stored wheat would be confiscated under the law where necessary.

Highlighting reform measures, he said the government was working to improve transparency in the wheat sector, including the introduction of a digital payment system for farmers aimed at reducing corruption and eliminating exploitative practices.

The PFMA Sindh Zone Chairman appreciated the provincial government’s decision not to impose restrictions on wheat movement, saying it was consistent with constitutional provisions and had benefited farmers, growers, and the business community.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Food Department, including the Secretary Food, Director Food, Additional Director Food, and other relevant officers.
