Govt, goods transporters agree to form Joint Monitoring Committee

August 12, 2026 (MLN): The government concluded a two-day negotiations with the All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance in Islamabad, deciding to establish a Joint Monitoring Committee comprising Customs authorities and goods transporters, besides discussing short- and long-term measures to address issues faced by transporters in dealing with customs authorities.

The concluding session was chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Convener of the committee constituted by the prime minister, while Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwaar participated via video link and assured the transporters of full cooperation from his ministry on maritime-related matters.

The five-hour-long meeting was attended by the Federal Secretary for Communications, Chairman NHA, Inspector General Motorway Police and senior officers of relevant departments, while Malik Shehzad Awan, Nasir Jafri, Owais Chaudhry, Qamar-uz-Zaman, Bakhtawar Khan, Shabar Malik and other office-bearers represented the Goods Transporters Alliance, said a press release issued.

Speaking at the meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan directed the authorities to promptly address transporters' complaints regarding weigh stations, stating that state-of-the-art weigh stations with minimal human intervention would be established on all motorways. The transporters' delegation lauded the minister's efforts in effectively addressing the issues.

On the minister's directions, senior FBR officials presented recommendations on the proposals submitted by the transporters, while officials of the Port and Shipping authorities and Karachi Port Trust (KPT) also briefed the meeting on relevant matters. Various proposals concerning the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Motorway Police, among other issues, were also discussed.

On the axle-load issue, the transporters expressed full support for the minister's policy, stating that the matter should be controlled at its source through a uniform policy.

The meeting also included detailed discussions between senior officials of the Ministry of Petroleum and transporters' representatives.
