Gas crisis forces Pakistan into spot play

April 23, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan is turning to the high-cost spot market for liquefied natural gas (LNG) after a prolonged gap of more than two years, as authorities scramble to contain an energy crisis intensified by escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a rare move, Pakistan LNG Ltd. has issued a tender seeking three LNG cargoes for delivery between late April and mid-May, with suppliers asked to submit bids by Friday, as reported by Bloomberg.
The step signals growing urgency within the government to secure fuel supplies amid mounting shortages.
The disruption stems largely from regional instability, which has severely constrained LNG flows.
Pakistan, heavily reliant on long-term supplies from Qatar, has not received a shipment since early March.
The situation worsened after conflict in the region led to the closure of key export infrastructure and shipping routes, including restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz , a critical artery for global energy trade.
As a result, domestic gas shortages have intensified, triggering widespread power outages and raising concerns over their impact on economic activity.
Meanwhile, several LNG vessels that loaded cargo in Qatar weeks ago remain stranded in the Gulf.
Ship-tracking data indicates that some tankers briefly attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz before retreating, highlighting the continued uncertainty surrounding supply routes.
Earlier, Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR also indicated that it is prepared to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan once it receives a formal purchase request.
The government’s decision to tap the spot market highlights the severity of the crisis, as it seeks immediate relief despite significantly higher procurement costs.
