Foreign currency deposits rise by $31m in September 2026

October 14, 2026 (MLN): Foreign currency deposits rose by $31.31mn, or 0.45%, to $6.966bn in September 2026 compared to $6.935bn in the previous month, the latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan showed.

On a year-on-year basis, total deposits declined by $89.66mn or 1.27% compared to $7.056bn in September 2025.

According to the data, foreign currency deposits by residents stood at $5.920bn during the month under review, an increase of $54.93mn or 0.94% compared to $5.865bn reported in the previous month.

On a year-on-year basis, resident deposits fell by $211.88mn or 3.46% from $6.132bn in September 2025.

Meanwhile, non-resident deposits declined to $1.046bn in September 2026, a fall of $23.62mn or 2.21% compared to $1.070bn in August 2026.

Year-on-year, non-resident deposits climbed by $122.22mn or 13.23% from $923.69mn in September 2025.

The resident deposits comprised $2.065bn in demand deposits, $1.703bn in savings deposits and $2.151bn in time deposits.

Non-resident deposits consisted of $636.95mn in demand deposits, $223.73mn in savings deposits and $185.23mn in time deposits.

As these deposits help to finance large fiscal and external current account deficits, during the month $827.94mn was utilised for pre-shipment financing, $169.32mn for post-shipment financing and $1.143bn for import financing.

Further, $1.350bn was placed with the SBP and Pakistani banks, of which $396.62mn was placed under CRR requirements, $724.39mn under SCRR requirements, $19.26mn with banks within Pakistan and $209.66mn with banks outside Pakistan.

Additionally, $297.08mn was held as balances abroad, while $231.13mn remained as cash in hand.
