September 22, 2026 (MLN): Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to develop a regulated virtual-assets framework, stressing the role of blockchain and tokenization in expanding financial access while reaffirming the country’s commitment to climate action and national climate priorities at international events in New York.

Speaking at the “United Nations Digital Cooperation Day 2026 Blockchain and the Tokenized Future: Sovereign Choices and Safeguards for Next-Gen DPI,” Muhammad Aurangzeb said blockchain and tokenization should be directed towards addressing real economic needs, including reducing remittance costs, supporting SME financing, facilitating sovereign debt and widening access to financial services, according to a press release issued by the Finance Ministry on Tuesday.

The finance minister emphasized that private-sector innovation in emerging digital technologies needs to be backed by effective state safeguards, inclusive digital infrastructure and stronger international cooperation.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring that emerging economies have a meaningful role in developing global standards for the evolving digital ecosystem.

Separately, Muhammad Aurangzeb expressed Pakistan’s support for the COP31 Action Agenda during its launch, saying that the initiative is closely aligned with the country’s national climate priorities and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0.

He highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate-related risks and identified key areas of focus, including clean energy and electrification, renewable-energy development, energy-efficient buildings, climate-resilient urban development, climate education and public awareness, food security and climate-resilient agriculture.

Muhammad Aurangzeb welcomed the proposed Climate Implementation Bridge as a mechanism to convert NDC commitments into investable and bankable projects, stressing that the key challenge now lies in effective implementation rather than simply formulating plans.

He also appreciated the COP31 Action Agenda’s defined action points and key performance indicators, describing the framework as practical, impact-oriented and focused on achieving measurable results.
