Customs system set for major overhaul

August 26, 2025 (MLN): The government is all set to modernize Pakistan’s customs inspection and assessment system with advanced technology and a faceless mechanism to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while chairing a meeting said, that the reforms aim to facilitate importers and exporters, boost investment, and increase national revenue.

He stressed that the time required for administrative customs procedures should be reduced, and all relevant departments must work under an integrated strategy to ensure effective implementation.

Adoption of best international practices and feasible strategies in customs reforms were directed as well as the need for a well-organized plan to guarantee timely cargo delivery at ports amid growing trade volumes was emphasized.

He also called for immediate steps to make the customs assessment review and appeals process more transparent.

Artificial intelligence is already being used in customs inspections through scanners, significantly reducing clearance times.

It was also reported that effective government action against smuggling has led to a drop in illegal goods transportation and an increase in trade through the formal customs system.
