China pushes biomedicine, water network development

July 07, 2026 (MLN): Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong has called for efforts to promote the innovative development of biomedicine and agricultural machinery and equipment, while accelerating the construction of a modern water network.

Liu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection tour of Shandong Province from Saturday to Monday.

He said biomedicine is an emerging pillar industry and called for greater focus on key core technologies in innovative drugs and medical devices, according to APP.

He also urged stronger basic research, deeper integration of artificial intelligence into research and development, and enhanced independent innovation capacity.

Liu further stressed the importance of leveraging enterprises as the main driver of innovation, strengthening the commercialization and application of scientific and technological achievements, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, and expanding the biomedicine industry.

On agricultural machinery, Liu called for accelerating the research, development and application of advanced and practical equipment.

He also urged support for technological upgrades and digital transformation of agricultural machinery enterprises, effective implementation of subsidy policies for machinery purchases and trade-ins, and efforts to improve the overall mechanization of agricultural production.

Regarding water infrastructure, Liu described water networks as major national infrastructure and called for coordinated integration of water networks at all levels to enhance flood control, disaster prevention, water resource allocation, and urban and rural water supply.
