June 08, 2026 (MLN): A China Pakistan agricultural collaboration has been formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at introducing high-quality tomato varieties for industrial processing in Pakistan.

The agreement was signed between the Beijing Jingwa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center (Jingwa Center) and Pakistan’s Iftekhar Ahmed Food and Beverages Pvt. Ltd.

It was signed during the Pakistan-China Information Technology, Telecom, Battery Energy Storage System, and Agriculture B2B Investment Conference held in Hangzhou, China, as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit.

Under the MoU, the Beijing Jingwa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center will supply specially developed tomato varieties designed for industrial use.

These varieties are characterized by high Brix levels, higher solids content, and improved pulp yield. They are specifically suitable for processing into tomato paste and puree, as reported by APP.

The collaboration will initially proceed with research and development activities in Sindh, where six to seven selected tomato varieties will undergo field and greenhouse trials.

Experts from both countries will jointly assess their adaptability to local climate conditions, soil profiles, cultivation practices, and disease resistance.

The partnership will also include technology transfer covering modern farming techniques and controlled-environment agriculture to support year-round production.

Following successful trials, the most suitable varieties will be commercialized in Pakistan, with continued technical support from the Chinese side.

The initiative is expected to reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported tomato paste currently costing around $1m annually while also strengthening export potential for value-added agricultural products.

According to company representatives, the project could attract up to $7m in investment in industrial tomato production.

The final selected variety will be registered locally and distributed to farmers on a wider scale, supporting productivity gains and contributing to improved food security and a more climate-resilient tomato value chain.
