Bank deposit rate falls by 9bps in July

August 18, 2026 (MLN): The return on bank deposits has decreased by 9 basis points to 3.96% in July 2026 compared to the deposit rate of 4.05% last month, according to the latest official data.

On a yearly basis, the weighted average rate paid for deposits by the banking sector has decreased by 857bps compared to the return of 12.53% last year.

Meanwhile, the lending rate for all scheduled banks stood at 11.94%, down 9bps compared to June. While it fell 5bps compared to the same month of last year.

After adjusting for inflation, the real deposit rate remained in negative territory at minus 3.51% in July, deteriorating from minus 2.99% in June.

In contrast, the real lending rate eased to 4.47% in July from 4.99% in the preceding month.
