Weekly SPI decreases by 0.81%

May 30, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation decreased by 0.81% compared to the previous week, while it rose by 0.41% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.
During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 14 (27.45%) items increased, 10 (19.61%) items decreased and 27 (52.94%) items remained stable.
The SPI for the current week ended on May 29, 2025 decreased by 0.81%. Decrease is observed in the prices of Electricity Charges for Q1 (10.10%), Chicken (8.51%), LPG (2.67%), Sugar (0.25%), Powdered Milk (0.20%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5Kg (0.17%), Wheat Flour (0.09%), Rice-IRRI-6/9 (0.07%), Garlic (0.05%) and Pulse Moong (0.01%).
On the other hand, major increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (4.54%), Potatoes (2.94%), Eggs (2.19%), Onions (2.17%), Gur (0.77%), Bananas (0.73%), Mustard Oil (0.34%), Cigarettes (0.25%), Pulse Mash (0.22%), Pulse Gram (0.17%), Pulse Masoor (0.14%) and Rice Basmati Broken (0.12%).
The year on year trend depicts increase of 0.41%, Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Chicken (32.92%), Eggs (32.30%), Pulse Moong (31.45%), Powdered Milk (23.75%), Sugar (21.96%), Bananas (21.17%), Pulse Gram (19.66%), Beef (17.51%), LPG (16.30%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5Kg (13.67%), and Vegetable Ghee 1Kg (12.76%).
While major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (55.56%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (36.54%), Potatoes (29.28%), Garlic (26.51%), Tomatoes (19.22%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Pulse Mash (17.50%), Wheat Flour (15.11%), Petrol (7.43%) Pulse Masoor (7.42%), Diesel (7.02%) and Chilies Powder (6.97%).
The lowest income group experienced a weekly decrease of 0.67%, while the inflation for the highest income group down by 0.74%.
On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 1.04% and 1.50%.
Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 0.22% while the highest income group increased by 1.50%.
The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,467 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.09% from last week’s price, and a 6.85% decrease from last year.
Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,417 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.02% lower than the previous week, and 14.55% higher than prices last year.
PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.
SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
