September 05, 2023 (MLN): Retail sugar prices in Karachi have reached a record high of Rs200 per kilogram (KG), with the ex-factory price for sugar standing at Rs174/Kg, while in the wholesale market, sugar is available at Rs180/Kg.

Sugar prices have reached this mark not only in Karachi but also in other cities across the country, as per media reports.

According to the retailers, this hike in prices is attributed to rising transportation costs that have increased the cost of production significantly.

To note, petrol prices have crossed the Rs305 mark as the caretaker government hiked the petrol and High-Speed Diesel (HSD) prices by Rs14.91 and Rs18.44 per liter to Rs305.36 and Rs311.84 per liter on September 01.

An increase in petrol prices has a direct impact on basic items in Pakistan.

The Weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the Combined Group inched up by 0.54% WoW during the week ended August 31, 2023.

The most significant increase was observed in the prices of food items, with sugar prices rising by 7.17%.
