President Arif Alvi invites CEC to fix election date

August 23, 2023 (MLN): President Arif Alvi has invited Sikandar Sultan Raja, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for a meeting today or tomorrow to fix an appropriate date for general elections, as per a notice issued by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan today.

The National Assembly was dissolved on the advice of the Prime Minister by the President on August 09, 2023, three days ahead of its mandated period.

The notice states that by virtue of Article 48 (5) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is obliged to appoint a date not later than ninety days from the date of dissolution for the holding of the General Election of Assembly.

Additionally, the president shall also appoint a caretaker Cabinet in accordance with the provisions of Article 224 or, as the case may be, Article 224A.

To note, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar was appointed as the caretaker finance minister on August 17 to look after the matters of finance and revenue, economic affairs, statistics, and privatization.
