January 23, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PSX: PPL) has successfully carried out a water shut-off operation at the Shahdad X-1 well in the Gambat South Block.

This intervention has significantly improved gas production at the Shahdad X-1 well.

The flow rate has increased from 2.2 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) to 8.4 MMscfd, the notification issued to the local bourse.

At the same time, water production has been drastically reduced from 3,000 barrels per day (BPD) to just 26 BPD, marking a major success in optimizing the well’s performance.

Shahdad X-1 is a sweet gas well that was drilled in 2012 and became operational in 2015.

Initially, it produced 26mn standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas.

However, by 2024, production had declined significantly due to severe water production.

A Production Logging Tool (PLT) survey conducted in August 2024 confirmed this decline and identified the cause as inter-layer crossflow, which required effective remediation.

The company worked together with a coiled tubing service provider to develop a specific solution for the Shahdad X-1 well.

After assessing the cost, risks, and feasibility of operations, they chose an acid-soluble cement to isolate the water-producing zones.

During the execution, challenges like fluid losses during well-kill operations were managed by using Loss Circulation Material (LCM) and brine for stabilization.

The cement was placed with precision, and after a 32-hour curing period, it was confirmed through slickline to ensure proper placement.

This milestone marks the first-ever water shut-off operation in the Gambat South Block and the initial use of acid-soluble cement technology in the company's portfolio.

The success of this operation demonstrates the company's technical expertise, operational excellence, and dedication to improving production from mature fields.
