Power generation plummets by 21.2% MoM in November 2023

December 20, 2023 (MLN): The total power generation in the country plunged by 21.2% MoM to 7,547 GWh during November 2023 as compared to 9,572 GWh in October, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) showed.

On a year-on-year basis, the total power generation decreased by 9.8% YoY compared to 8,367 GWh in the same period last year.

On a cumulative basis, in 5MFY24, electricity generation stood at 61,258 GWh, up by 1.8% YoY compared to the generation of 60,153 in 5MFY23.

Source-wise, generation through all sources except RFO and Coal (imported) registered a fall in November, compared with the figures in October.

Hydel, RLNG, Nuclear, gas, local coal, wind, solar, and bagasse generation all declined by 11.5%, 58.8%, 13.9%, 13.9%, 1.3%, 26%, 22.5%, 34.2%, and 6.9% MoM, respectively.

Generation through imported coal and RFO increased by 44.6% and 4x MoM, respectively.

When compared to November 2022, generation through hydel, local coal, RLNG and Wind rose by 10%, 2.95x, 23.1% and 19.7% respectively.

Whereas other sources decreased on a year-on-year basis.

Share-wise, power generation through hydel contributed the largest in November 2023, as it accounted for 36.5% (2,775 GWh) of total electricity.

With a share of 20.8%, power generation from Nuclear was around 1,572 GWh, whereas, local coal contributed 13.1% (987 GWh) to overall electricity generation.

Meanwhile, RLNG-based power plants generated around 798 GWh (10.6% of total generation).

The average fuel cost surged by 19.7% YoY to Rs7.17/kWh in November 2023, compared to Rs5.99/kWh in the SPLY.

On a sequential basis, the fuel cost dropped by 13.2% MoM in November 2023 compared to Rs8.26/kWh in October 2023.

The fuel cost of Nuclear fell by 1.6% MoM from Rs1.23/kWh and Rs1.21/kWh.

Conversely, for all other sources, the fuel cost increased on a monthly basis.
