Pakistan’s trade deficit shrinks to $2.31bn in January

February 03, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan’s trade deficit stood at $2.31 billion in January 2025, reflecting a 5.47% improvement compared to December 2024, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

This improvement came despite a slight decline in imports, signaling a shift in the country’s external trade dynamics.

In January 2025, Pakistan’s exports stood at $2.92bn, reflecting a 0.31% increase from $2.91bn in December 2024.

Meanwhile, imports declined by 2.33% to $5.23bn, compared to $5.36bn in the previous month.

On a year-on-year basis, exports grew by 4.59% in January 2025, rising from $2.79bn in January 2024.

Imports also surged significantly, jumping by 10.04% to $5.23 billion from $4.76bn in the same month last year.

Consequently, the trade deficit widened by 17.78%, reaching $2.31bn compared to $1.96bn in January 2024.

For the first seven months of the fiscal year 2024-25, exports totaled $19.55bn, marking a 9.98% increase from $17.78bn in the corresponding period last year.

Imports during this period reached $33.04bn, up 6.95% from $30.89bn.

The cumulative trade deficit stood at $13.48bn, representing a 2.84% rise compared to the $13.11bn recorded in the previous fiscal period.
