Pakistan, Japan sign agreement for smart water meters in Faisalabad

May 14, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan and Japan have formalized an agreement to install smart water meters in Faisalabad City to improve water supply efficiency.

The signing ceremony for the Grant Agreement, Exchange of Notes, and Record of Discussion was held at the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The Government of Japan has allocated ¥510 Million ($ 3.5m) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Japanese Economic and Social Development Program.

The funds will be used to install approximately 8,000 smart water meters in Faisalabad, which will enhance water distribution, improve demand management, conserve water resources, and ensure the financial sustainability of WASA Faisalabad.

This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s vision for better urban governance and environmental sustainability, accoring to the press release issued today.

The government believes it will serve as a model that could be replicated in other cities across the country.

Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Mr. AKAMATSU Shuichi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Pakistan, signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of their respective governments.

Dr. Niaz expressed his appreciation for Japan’s invaluable support and assured that Pakistan would extend all necessary assistance for the successful implementation of the project and foster continued cooperation.

Ambassador Shuichi reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening the bilateral ties and collaboration between the two countries.
