In a notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, Pakistan Petroleum Limited has announced that the company, together with its joint venture partner, Sindh Energy Holding Company Limited, has discovered hydrocarbons from exploratory well Hub X-1, located in Lasbela District, Balochistan.

Hub X-1 was spud on September 9, 2017 and drilled down to the depth of 4,555 metres to test the potential of Cretaceous and Jurassic reservoirs.

Based on the wireline log results and drilling data, hydrocarbon bearing zones were identified in Goru formations of Cretaceous age. During testing, the well flowed 0.08 MMsefd gas at 16/64” choke from a 2730 to 2760 meter interval while continuous gas from the zone between 2250 meter to 2375 meter was observed at the surface at rate of 0.02 MMscfd at 8/64” choke but that rate may be uncertain due to a very low flow rate.

“The discovery is too meager to have any commercial significant but it has an academic significance,” says the company.

It may also have a favorable impact on the future of exploration in the area but the true extent of the discovery will only be known after substantial appraisal work.

Earlier in March 2018, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) had announced a hydrocarbons discovery at Adhi South X-1, an exploratory well in Rawalpindi. The discovery had been made with its join venture partners Oil and Gas Devleopment Company Limited and Pakistan Oil fields Limited.

The tested well had flowed 1,550 bpd of curde oil and 2.62 MMscfd of natural gas at a choke size 32/64”. Adhi South X-1 was spud on June 30, 2017 and was drilled down to 3395 metres to test the potential of Khewra and Tobra formations, an earlier announcement by the company reported.
