Norway tops FDI in Pakistan in May, China leads in 11MFY23

June 20, 2023 (MLN): Norway emerged as the largest investor in Pakistan in May 2023, with a total direct investment of $27.9 million, followed by China and U.A.E who invested $26.6m and $15.9m respectively, according to SBP data issued.

However, cumulatively, during July-May FY23, China remained the largest investor, followed by Japan and Switzerland with net FDI of $374.8m, $167.4m, and $140.2m respectively.

Meanwhile, cumulatively, Norway had a negative $37.2 million during Jul-May FY23.

The Inflows from China decreased by 12% YoY compared to Jul-May FY22, while the inflows from Switzerland and U.A.E recorded an increase of 5.69% YoY and 13.86% YoY in 11MFY21.

Other important investors were Hongkong, U.S., and Switzerland with a net FDI of $13.2m, $11.2m and $8.5m respectively during the month.

Moreover, Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI), which represents an investment in the equity market showed a negative picture, as net FPI outflows during the period under review stood at $15.1m.

The US emerged as the biggest withdrawal of portfolio investment during the month, as it withdrew $2.2m during the month and $27.9m during 11MFY23, followed by the U.A.E with $2.1m during the month.
