April 16, 2025 (MLN): K-Electric (KE) took another step in its renewable energy roadmap with regulatory hearings held at NEPRA on two of its utility-scale solar projects 150 MW at Deh Metha Gar and 120 MW at Deh Halkani.

Together, these projects mark significant progress towards KE’s aim of adding 1,300 MW of renewable energy to its generation portfolio by 2030.

The 150 MW Deh Metha Gar and 120 MW Deh Halkani project attracted the lowest tariff bids of Rs9.8 per unit (approximately 3.4 US cents) from Kot Addu Power Company Limited (KAPCO).

Projected annual savings of Rs3.412 billion annually and Rs86.897bn over a period of 25 years are expected from these projects.

KE submitted auction evaluation reports for both these projects leading to the hearing, according to the press release.

Following NEPRA’s approval earlier in 2024, KE launched the industry’s first competitive bidding process for its renewable energy projects.

Together, KE’s renewable energy projects form part of the 640 MW green energy initiative, resulting in savings of Rs12bn annually replacing expensive fuels.

Moonis Alvi, CEO KE, highlighted the significance of the projects,"These projects have enabled KE to set up a new precedent for cost-effective renewable energy in Pakistan."

"This transparent, competitive bidding process not only underscored KE’s commitment to securing the best possible rates but also highlighted how far the company has come in driving transition to a cleaner, more affordable energy future," he noted.

He further mentioned that these projects emphasize our dedication to addressing the energy trilemma and tapering off our reliance on imported fuels.

“To make these projects a reality, we look forward to NEPRA completing its regulatory scrutiny and giving the go ahead to start work on a sustainable future where clean energy is affordable for all," he added.

Hearings for 150 MW Winder and Bela projects in Balochistan, and 220 MW hybrid (wind and solar) projects were conducted in December 2024 and February 2025, respectively, decisions of which are also awaited.

KE’s renewable projects, totaling 640 MW, include 150 MW solar projects in Balochistan (50 MW at Winder and 100 MW at Bela), 270 MW in Sindh (120 MW at Deh Halkani and 150 MW at Deh Metha Gar).

In addition, a 220 MW hybrid (solar and wind) project at Dhabeji, Sindh, was also part of the bidding capacity, further solidifying KE’s position in pioneering auction-based induction of renewable energy.
