Govt shifts subsidy focus to farmers

March 15, 2024 (MLN): To boost agricultural productivity, the Government of Pakistan has decided to directly provide subsidies to farmers for fertilizer, a shift from the previous policy favoring factories.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Petroleum, Masood Malik, stated that farmers in Pakistan used to receive minimal subsidies while factories received more.

Masood Malik highlighted the revolution in agriculture worldwide, and underscored the urgency for Pakistan to increase its production capacity.

He pointed out that a staggering 30-35% of crops are wasted before they even reach the market.

Providing quality seeds to farmers will double their production capacity, the minister noted.

Moreover, he said that instead of focusing on lands, agro-industrial farms should be set up.
