Govt borrows Rs504bn debt in a week

April 10, 2025 (MLN): The government of Pakistan has acquired an additional debt of Rs504.23 billion during the week ended March 28, 2025, which brings its total net borrowing for ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs1.11 trillion, according to the central bank's weekly estimates.

The government sector borrowings are divided into three broad categories based on the purpose of loan which are budgetary support, commodity operations, and others.

Split three ways between these broad categories, the weekly net borrowing for budgetary support was Rs506.64bn, while the retirement off commodity operations stood at Rs1.68bn.

Meanwhile, a total of Rs732.56m was retired off others during the week.

Accordingly, this takes the cumulative borrowing for the current fiscal year 2025 to Rs1.41 trillion for budgetary support, Rs303.37bn retirement off Commodity Operations, and Rs1.32bn borrowing for others.

The two biggest sources of financing for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and the scheduled banks.

This fiscal year, the government has paid off a net sum of Rs171.75bn to the central bank, out of which the Federal Government borrowed Rs488.7bn whereas, the Provincial Government retired Rs610.6bn, AJK Government retired Rs33.44bn, and the GB Government retired Rs16.4bn.

On the other hand, the government has lent out a net total of Rs1.58tr to scheduled banks. Out of this amount, the Federal Government borrowed Rs1.79tr while the Provincial Government retired Rs206.25bn.
