Govt borrows Rs37bn debt in a week

April 22, 2025 (MLN): The government of Pakistan has acquired an additional debt of Rs36.64 billion during the week ended April 11, 2025, which brings its total net borrowing for ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs1.21 trillion, according to the central bank's weekly estimates.

The government sector borrowings are divided into three broad categories based on the purpose of loan which are budgetary support, commodity operations, and others.

Split three ways between these broad categories, the weekly net borrowing for budgetary support was Rs37.82bn, while the retirement off commodity operations stood at Rs1.08bn.

Meanwhile, a total of Rs98.91m was retired off others during the week.

Accordingly, this takes the cumulative borrowing for the current fiscal year 2025 to Rs1.52 trillion for budgetary support, Rs304.96bn retirement off Commodity Operations, and Rs1.22bn borrowing for others.

The two biggest sources of financing for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and the scheduled banks.

This fiscal year, the government has paid off a net sum of Rs491.26bn to the central bank, out of which the Federal Government borrowed Rs117.38bn whereas, the Provincial Government retired Rs567.76bn, AJK Government retired Rs25.18bn, and the GB Government retired Rs15.7bn.

On the other hand, the government has lent out a net total of Rs2.01tr to scheduled banks. Out of this amount, the Federal Government borrowed Rs2.21tr while the Provincial Government retired Rs198.02bn.
