January 23, 2025 (MLN): The Challenge Fund for Climate Resilient Infrastructure has been launched by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.
The transformative fund will be financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and jointly implemented by GIZ Pakistan and Adam Smith International (ASI).
The initiative is designed to bolster Pakistan's adaptive capacity in the face of increasing climate challenges, according to the press release.
Speaking about the overarching objectives of the initiative, Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Ministry Secretary Aisha Humera Moriani highlighted that this much-needed climate-resilient infrastructure development initiative will be spearheaded jointly by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.
She added that GIZ, a German governmental development agency, will also play a key role in the initiative.
She said this initiative aims to bolster the country’s infrastructure resilience against the impacts of climate change and support the construction of sustainable and adaptive infrastructure across vulnerable regions.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam said the launch of the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Challenge Fund marks a significant milestone.
She added that it is a key step in the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen Pakistan's capacity to adapt to climate change.
She said this innovative fund will empower provinces and local governments to develop and implement infrastructure projects that are both climate-resilient and aligned with sustainable development goals.
Additionally, these projects will contribute to the well-being of local communities.
