November 21, 2019 (MLN): Avanceon has been awarded a contract for the up-gradation of the Emergency Shutdown (ESD) System at Lotte Chemical’s state-of-the-art plant situated at Port Qasim, Karachi. The scope of work entails the replacement of Yokogawa’s ProSafe-SLS system with the Tricon CX (SIL-3) system by Schneider Electric (SE).
The Lotte Chemical’s plant at Port Qasim Karachi is the only world-class manufacturer and supplier of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) in Pakistan. It has the capacity to deliver 500,000 tonnes of PTA every year. A base raw material for Pakistan’s textile and PET packaging industries, PTA is utilized as a part of manufacturing polyester staple fiber, polyester filament yarn, and PET.
This ESD up-gradation project is very crucial for Lotte Chemical as it is going to handle the emergency shutdown function for the entire plant. Essentially a lifeline for plant operations in order to minimize/avoid the consequences of emergency situations, Lotte Chemical was looking for a modern and reliable safety instrumented system that conforms to their plant’s critical process safety requirements. It was also looking for an experienced technology partner/system integrator who can deliver state of the art integrated solution and provide excellent support throughout the project lifecycle.
The project is also important from a technological point of view (based on Avanceon’s proposed solution) since Lotte Chemical, for the first time, is replacing the ProSafe-SLS with Tricon CX ESD system. It was an uphill task for the Avanceon team to convince Lotte Chemical to make this crucial business decision and opt for SE’s Tricon CX instead of straight forward Yokogawa ProSafe’s upgrade. But after multiple rounds of discussions and detailed technical demonstration, Lotte Chemical decided to go ahead with Tricon CX. This upgrade will help Lotte Chemical to better mitigate risks, eliminate incidents that result in minimizing downtime and ensure measurable operational profitability improvements.
