World Bank chief explores KPK’s ancient Buddhist treasures

February 1, 2026 (MLN): The Jaulian Buddhist archaeological site in Khanpur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, received a high-profile visit from World Bank President Ajay Banga, demonstrating the province’s efforts in preserving and managing its cultural heritage.

The visit included a detailed briefing on the site’s historical significance and ongoing preservation initiatives.

Banga was accompanied by his spouse and senior World Bank officials.

The delegation was welcomed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Advisor on Finance, Muzzammil Aslam, MNA Faisal Amin Gandapur, and Federal Finance Minister Aurangzeb.

Commissioner Hazara Division Fayyaz Ali Shah and Director General of Archaeology Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr. Abdul Samad, were also present.

During the visit, Dr. Abdul Samad provided an overview of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s archaeological sites, with special focus on Jaulian, one of the region’s most significant Buddhist heritage locations.

Banga appreciated the management and services of the sites and assured support from the World Bank for heritage preservation initiatives in the province.

Advisor Muzzammil Aslam presented a shield to Banga and engaged in discussions on the province’s economic affairs, while also inviting him to visit other historical and archaeological sites across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Jaulian site, part of the ancient Gandhara civilization, remains a key attraction for domestic and international tourists, contributing to the province’s cultural tourism sector.
