Wheat procurement tightened amid global risks

April 02, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan is moving to ensure uninterrupted and transparent wheat procurement during the ongoing harvest season, with authorities directed to keep procurement systems fully operational to avoid market distortions and protect farmers from price exploitation.
The direction came during a meeting of the National Wheat
Oversight Committee, chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and
Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, where wheat procurement arrangements,
inter-provincial coordination, and food security measures were reviewed in
light of rising global uncertainties, according to the press release.
The meeting noted that geopolitical tensions and the
evolving situation in the Middle East have heightened risks to global food
supply chains, with potential disruptions in trade routes, freight
uncertainties, and volatility in commodity markets.
In this context, the need to strengthen domestic
agricultural systems, improve strategic reserves management, and ensure timely
procurement of essential commodities was emphasized.
Participants reviewed ongoing wheat procurement operations
across provinces, focusing on readiness of procurement systems, smooth market
functioning during the harvest period, and facilitation of farmers at the
grassroots level.
It was stressed that procurement mechanisms must remain
transparent, efficient, and accessible to ensure farmers across all
wheat-producing regions can benefit without delays.
A key concern highlighted was that any lag in procurement
during the peak harvest season could create market imbalances, allowing
intermediary players to take advantage of price differentials at the expense of
farmers.
Relevant institutions were instructed to maintain fully
functional procurement operations throughout the critical harvesting window.
The committee also discussed measures to enhance wheat
productivity over the longer term, including promotion of certified seed
varieties, balanced fertilizer use, and adoption of modern farming techniques
such as laser land leveling and improved sowing and harvesting systems to
increase per-acre yields.
The importance of coordinated efforts between federal and
provincial governments was also highlighted, particularly in agricultural
extension services, farmer awareness, and timely availability of inputs, to
ensure effective implementation of policies amid climate variability and
external pressures.
Provincial representatives briefed the meeting on their
procurement preparations and farmer support measures, while the federal
government reaffirmed continued technical and policy support to maintain
stability in wheat procurement operations.
Wheat was reiterated as a strategic crop for Pakistan’s food
security, with emphasis on strengthening domestic production systems and
improving management of essential food commodities in response to global supply
challenges.
