Weekly SPI increases by 0.31%

August 15, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation increased by 0.31% compared to the previous week, while it rose by 2.21% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 17 (33.33%) items increased, 09 (17.65%) items decreased and 25 (49.02%) items remained stable.

Major increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (12.62%), Chicken (4.68%), Eggs (2.11%), Onions (1.98%), Garlic (1.60%), Wheat Flour (1.44%), Gur (1.04%), Pulse Mash (0.52%) and Firewood (0.17%). 

On the other hand, decrease is observed in the prices of Bananas (2.52%), Potatoes (1.65%), Pulse Gram (0.84%), Pulse Moong (0.73%), LPG (0.36%), Pulse Masoor (0.29%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (0.10%), Salt Powdered (0.06%) and Rice Irri-6/9 (0.04%) 


The year on year trend depicts increase of 2.21%. Major increase is observed in the prices of Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Gas Charges for Q1 (29.85%), Sugar (22.83%), Beef (13.54%), Pulse Moong (13.32%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (11.97%), Gur (11.65%), Firewood (11.41%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (11.25%), Cooked Beef (8.86%), Cooked Daal (8.22%) and Diesel (7.38%).

While major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (52.10%), Tomatoes (34.33%), Garlic (26.71%), Pulse Mash (22.62%), Wheat Flour (19.41%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Potatoes (17.80%), Pulse Gram (10.88%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (10.02%) and LPG (5.16%).

The lowest income group experienced a weekly increase of 0.31%, while the inflation for the highest income group up by 0.31%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 1.46% and 2.99%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group increased by 2.22% while the highest income group increased by 1.46%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,405 per 50 kg bag, remained unchanged by 0.00% from last week’s price, and a 7.35% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price rose to Rs1,412 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.02% higher than the previous week, and 2.50% lower than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
