Weekly SPI increases by 0.21%

October 02, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), increased by 0.21% for the week ended October 01, 2026, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The data shows major increases in the
prices of Chicken (7.25%), Garlic (1.85%), Pulse Gram (1.30%), LPG (1.17%),
Eggs (0.72%), Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.55%), Onions (0.39%), Washing Soap (0.33%),
Wheat Flour (0.29%), and Long Cloth and Lawn Printed (0.19% each).
On the other hand, major decreases were observed in the prices of Diesel (3.43%), Bananas (1.52%), Sugar (1.05%), Potatoes (0.96%), Petrol (0.65%), Pulse Moong (0.63%), Tomatoes (0.51%), Pulse Masoor (0.42%), Gur (0.12%) and Powdered Milk (0.10%).

During the week, out of 51 items,
prices of 20 (39.21%) items increased, 10 (19.61%) items decreased and 21
(41.18%) items remained stable.
On an annual basis, the SPI showed a
year-on-year (YoY) increase of 11.53%.
Major increases were observed in the
prices of Onions (114.20%), LPG (66.59%), Electricity for Q1 (58.59%), Diesel
(44.50%), Petrol (44.05%), Wheat Flour (32.65%), Chilies Powder (15.55%),
Mutton (15.07%), Chicken (13.60%), Beef (12.90%), Bread Plain (8.96%) and Milk
Fresh (8.10%).
However, decreases were observed in the prices of Tomatoes (45.52%), Potatoes (39.54%), Sugar (21.95%), Eggs (17.47%), Salt Powder (14.81%), Pulse Masoor (10.92%), Pulse Gram (9.90%) and Pulse Moong (8.20%).
The average price of Sona Urea stood at Rs4,758 per 50kg bag, which is same as the previous week and up 8.48% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the average cement price stood at Rs1,572 per 50kg bag, which is 1.41% higher from the previous week and 11.98% higher than prices recorded last year.
The SPI, which tracks price movements of 51 essential commodities from 50
markets across 17 cities, serves as a key barometer of short-term inflation
trends in Pakistan.
The indicator is computed on a weekly
basis to assess price movements of essential items at shorter intervals,
enabling policymakers to review the country's price situation in near
real-time.
