Weekly SPI increases by 0.99%

September 25, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), increased by 0.99% for the week ended September 24, 2026, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The data highlights that the major increase is observed in the prices of Electricity for Q1 (18.76%), Eggs (2.02%), Garlic (1.57%), LPG (1.55%), Pulse Masoor (0.75%), Chicken (0.72%), Washing Soap (0.59%), Mutton (0.31%), Beef (0.30%), Curd (0.27%), Milk Fresh (0.14%) and Wheat Flour (0.11%).

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (13.45%), Potatoes (8.33%), Bananas (5.66%), Onions (2.42%), Diesel (1.57%), Salt Powdered (0.90%), Petrol (0.34%), Sugar (0.23%), Mustard Oil (0.04%) and Gur (0.01%).


During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 20 (39.21%) items increased, 10 (19.61%) items decreased and 21 (41.18%) items remained stable.

On an annual basis, the SPI showed a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 11.92%.

Major increase is observed in the prices of Onions (115.98%), LPG (63.97%), Electricity for Q1 (58.59%), Diesel (51.80%), Petrol (47.49%), Wheat Flour (32.41%), Gents Sponge Chappal (16.69%), Chilies Powder (16.37%), Beef (13.22%), Firewood (10.72%), Bread Plain (8.96%), Shirting (8.38%), Washing Soap (8.36%) and Milk Fresh (8.10%).

However, decrease is observed in the prices of Potatoes (39.21%), Tomatoes (19.81%), Eggs (18.40%), Salt Powder (14.73%), Pulse Gram (11.65%), Pulse Masoor (10.47%), Pulse Moong (7.89%), Garlic (3.03%), Chicken (2.51%) and Rice Basmati Broken (0.33%).

The average price of Sona Urea stood at Rs4,758 per 50kg bag, which is 1.26% highrt from the previous week and up 8.39% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the average cement price stood at Rs1,550 per 50kg bag, which is 0.01 lower from the previous week and 10.35% higher than prices recorded last year.

The SPI, which tracks price movements of 51 essential commodities from 50 markets across 17 cities, serves as a key barometer of short-term inflation trends in Pakistan.

The indicator is computed on a weekly basis to assess price movements of essential items at shorter intervals, enabling policymakers to review the country's price situation in near real-time.
