September 18, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), increased by 0.49% for the week ended September 17, 2026, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).


The data highlights that the major increase is observed in the prices of Diesel (7.29%), Petrol (6.40%), LPG (3.26%), Garlic (1.94%), Eggs (1.72%), Pulse Gram (0.80%), Bread Plain (0.74%), Pulse Masoor (0.49%), Mustard Oil (0.44%), Pulse Moong (0.39%), Mutton (0.26%) and Firewood (0.07%).

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Bananas (6.17%), Tomatoes (5.66%), Onions (4.57%), Chicken (2.33%), Powdered Milk (0.40%), Wheat Flour (0.28%), Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.16%) and Sugar (0.14%).


During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 19 (37.25%) items increased, 9 (17.65%) items decreased and 23 (45.10%) items remained stable.

On an annual basis, the SPI showed a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 10.64%.

Major increase is observed in the prices of Onions (117.77%), LPG (60.42%), Diesel (54.21%), Petrol (48.00%), Electricity for Q1 (33.54%), Wheat Flour (33.27%), Chilies Powder (16.37%), Mutton (15.86%), Beef (12.88%), Bananas (9.24%), Bread Plain (8.89%) and Milk Fresh (8.12%).

However, decrease is observed in the prices of Potatoes (35.31%), Sugar (20.95%), Eggs (19.31%), Chicken (15.26%), Salt Powder (13.96%), Pulse Gram (12.42%), Pulse Masoor (11.26%) and Pulse Moong (8.49%).

The average price of Sona Urea stood at Rs4,699 per 50kg bag, which is 0.04% lower from the previous week and up 6.94% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the average cement price stood at Rs1,550 per 50kg bag, which is 0.28 higher from the previous week and 10.29% higher than prices recorded last year.

The SPI, which tracks price movements of 51 essential commodities from 50 markets across 17 cities, serves as a key barometer of short-term inflation trends in Pakistan.

The indicator is computed on a weekly basis to assess price movements of essential items at shorter intervals, enabling policymakers to review the country's price situation in near real-time.
