September 11, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), increased by 0.23% for the week ended September 10, 2026, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The data highlights that the major increase is observed in the prices of Petrol (6.18%), Diesel (5.49%), LPG (4.32%), Pulse Mash (0.79%), Washing Soap (0.49%), Wheat Flour (0.47%), Pulse Masoor (0.46%), Mustard Oil (0.36%), Cooking Oil 5 Litre (0.23%), Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.18%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (0.11%) and Curd (0.03%).

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Bananas (7.73%), Tomatoes (5.24%), Chicken (4.22%), Onions (3.72%), Potatoes (1.88%), Eggs (0.68%), Garlic (0.44%) and Sugar (0.42%).

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 14 (27.45%) items increased, 10 (19.61%) items decreased and 27 (52.94%) items remained stable

On an annual basis, the SPI showed a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 8.62%.

Major increase is observed in the prices of Onions (125.52%), LPG (55.42%), Diesel (45.26%), Petrol (39.10%), Wheat Flour (30.18%), Electricity for Q1 (25.24%), Chilies Powder (16.37%), Mutton (15.92%), Beef (13.28%), Bananas (10.51%), Milk Fresh (8.12%) and Bread Plain (8.09%).

However, decrease is observed in the prices of Potatoes (35.21%), Chicken (24.30%), Sugar (20.88%), Eggs (19.95%), Tomatoes (17.65%), Salt Powder (13.96%), Pulse Gram (13.52%) and Pulse Masoor (12.26%).

The average price of Sona Urea stood at Rs4,701 per 50kg bag, which is 0.35% higher from the previous week and up 7.12% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the average cement price stood at Rs1,546 per 50kg bag, which is 0.18 lower from the previous week and 9.84% higher than prices recorded last year.

The SPI, which tracks price movements of 51 essential commodities from 50 markets across 17 cities, serves as a key barometer of short-term inflation trends in Pakistan.

The indicator is computed on a weekly basis to assess price movements of essential items at shorter intervals, enabling policymakers to review the country's price situation in near real-time.
