Weekly SPI decreases by 0.48%

January 23, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s short-term inflation Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) decreased by 0.48% compared to the previous week, while it rose by 4.18% compared to the same period last year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

During the week, out of 51 essential items, prices of 12 items (23.53%) increased, 11 items (21.57%) decreased, while 28 items (54.90%) remained unchanged.
The major increase during the week was observed in the prices of tomatoes, which rose by 9.83%, followed by bananas up 3.66%, wheat flour increasing 2.27%, eggs higher by 1.02%.

Firewood rising 0.56%, pulse mash up 0.53%, pulse moong increasing 0.43%, shirting rising 0.27% and pulse gram edging up by 0.16%.

On the other hand, the major decrease was recorded in the prices of chicken, which declined by 16.68%, potatoes down 8.52%, onions falling 7.27%, LPG decreasing 3.54%.

Salt easing 1.52%, gur falling 1.00%, vegetable ghee 2.5Kg down 0.87%, cooking oil (5 liter) declining 0.53% and pulse masoor lower by 0.27%.
The year-on-year trend for the current week depicts an increase of 4.18% in the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI).

The major annual increase was observed in the prices of Wheat Flour, which surged by 38.60%, followed by Eggs up 35.99%, Gas Charges for Q1 increasing 29.85%, Beef rising 12.75%, Chilies Powder higher by 12.56%.

Firewood up 10.83%, Tomatoes increasing 10.02%, Powder Milk rising 9.79, Gur up 9.42%, Lawn Printed higher by 8.29% and Shirting increasing 8.22%.

On the contrary, a significant year-on-year decrease was recorded in the prices of Potatoes, which plunged by 47.26%, followed by Garlic down 36.28%, Onion declining 35.55%, Pulse Gram lower by 29.79%.

Tea Lipton falling 17.79%, Chicken decreasing 16.79%, Pulse Mash down 12.57%, Diesel falling 1.27% and Petrol declining 6.62%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,344 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.71% from last week’s price, and a 4.12% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price rose to Rs1,404 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.31% higher than the previous week, and 1.39% above last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
