Weekly SPI decreases by 0.16%

September 26, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation decreased by 0.16% compared to the previous week, while it rose by 3.95% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.
During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 17 (33.33%) items increased, 11 (21.57%) items decreased and
23 (45.10%) items remained stable.
Major decrease is observed in the prices of Chicken (12.46%), Bananas (4.22%), Potatoes (2.44%), Onions (1.61%), LPG (0.65%), Garlic (0.61%), Pulse Moong (0.60%), Pulse Gram (0.53%), Pulse Mash (0.39%), Pulse Masoor (0.14%) and Rice IRRI6/9 (0.01%).
On the other hand, major increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (9.04%), Eggs (0.88%), Wheat Flour
(0.76%), Gur (0.64%), Powdered Milk (0.58%), Washing Soap (0.47%), Mutton (0.40%), Cooking Oil (0.21%),
Lawn Printed (0.17%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5Kg (0.16%), Milk Fresh (0.15%) and Curd (0.11%).
The year on year trend depicts increase of 3.95%. Major increase is observed in the prices of Ladies Sandal
(55.62%), Tomatoes (53.61%), Sugar (31.90%), Gas Charges for Q1 (29.85%), Wheat Flour (17.36%), Pulse
Moong (16.67%), Gur (12.15%), Beef (12.04%), Firewood (11.77%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (11.37%), Vegetable
Ghee 1 Kg (11.09%), Diesel (9.51%) and Cooking Oil (9.01%).
On the contrary, decrease is observed in the prices of Onions
(42.39%), Garlic (27.95%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (26.26%), Pulse Gram (22.65%), Chicken (22.33%), Pulse
Mash (19.81%), Potatoes (18.04%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Pulse Masoor (4.54%) and Rice IRRI-6/9 (2.45%).
On a weekly basis, the highest decline was recorded for Q5 (above Rs44,175) at 0.21%, followed by Q4 (Rs29,518 – 44,175) with 0.14%, while Q1 (upto Rs17,732) registered a slight increase of 0.02%.
On a yearly basis, however, all quintiles experienced notable increases in SPI, with the highest impact observed in Q4 (4.77%) and Q3 (4.74%).
The lowest yearly rise was recorded for Q5 at 3.21%, indicating that lower and middle-income groups faced relatively higher inflationary pressures compared to higher-income households.
The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,389 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.1% from last week’s price, and a 4.2% decrease from last year.
Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,405 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.07% lower than the previous week, and 3.7% lower than prices last year.
PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.
SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
