Weekly SPI decreased by 0.91%

July 31, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), decreased by 0.91% for the week ended July 30, 2026, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The data highlights that the major decrease is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (22.96%), Chicken (11.20%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (9.06%), Bananas (0.70%), Sugar (0.16%) and Pulse Moong (0.15%).

On the other hand, major increase is observed in the prices of Onions (7.62%), Diesel (4.17%), Eggs (3.16%), Petrol (2.46%), Wheat Flour (2.00%), Potatoes (1.93%), LPG (1.90%),

Pulse Gram (1.44%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5kg (0.71%), Pulse Mash (0.69%), Pulse Masoor (0.64%) and Firewood (0.15%).

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 27 (52.94%) items increased, 06 (11.77%) items decreased and 18 (35.29%) items remained stable.

On an annual basis, the SPI showed a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 9.05%.

Major increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (228.71%), Onions (95.36%), Wheat Flour (78.65%), LPG (51.76%), Diesel (37.42%), Petrol (23.28%), Gents Sponge Chappal (16.69%),

Mutton (16.06%), Chilies Powder (15.20%), Bananas (14.69%), Beef (13.44%) and Bread Plain (9.69%),

However, major decrease is observed in the prices of Potatoes (30.89%), Pulse Gram (19.89%), Chicken (19.56%), Sugar (17.48%), Salt Powder (14.09%), Pulse Masoor (12.80%), Eggs (8.38%) and Pulse Moong (7.38%).

The average price of Sona Urea stood at Rs 4,651 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.08% lower from last week’s price, and up 5.44% compared to last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price is at Rs1,558 per 50 kg bag, which is 1.46% higher than the previous week, and 10.59% higher than prices last year. 

The SPI, which tracks price movements of 51 essential commodities from 50 markets across 17 cities, serves as a key barometer of short-term inflation trends in Pakistan.

The indicator is computed on a weekly basis to assess price movements of essential items at shorter intervals, enabling policymakers to review the country's price situation in near real-time.
