U.S gives Pakistan’s F-16s a high-flying makeover

December 11, 2025 (MLN):  The United States has approved a major $686 million upgrade for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets, aimed at modernizing the fleet and boosting military cooperation between the two countries.

According to a letter from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) sent to Congress on December 8, the notification officially begins a 30-day review period during which lawmakers will examine the proposed sale.

The DSCA said the upgrade “will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by helping Pakistan maintain interoperability with American and allied forces in ongoing counterterrorism operations and future contingency missions.”

The package includes Link–16 communication systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics updates, pilot training, and comprehensive logistical support, APP reported.

It is designed to modernize Pakistan’s Block–52 and Mid Life Upgrade F-16s, extend their operational life through 2040, and address critical safety concerns.

“These upgrades will allow the Pakistan Air Force to operate more seamlessly with the U.S. Air Force in combat, exercises, and training,” the DSCA added.

The move comes amid renewed U.S.-Pakistan engagement, following meetings between President Donald Trump and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
