November 13, 2025 (MLN):  The United States on Wednesday ended the longest government shutdown in its modern history after President Donald Trump signed a bipartisan bill to fund federal agencies through January 30.

The 43-day standoff, which began in late September, disrupted air travel, delayed paychecks for thousands of federal workers, and cut off food assistance for millions. The deadlock was rooted in a partisan dispute over health insurance tax credits that Democrats sought to renew before agreeing to extend government funding.

The shutdown began when the Republican-led House approved a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open through November 21. That measure stalled in the Senate as Democrats insisted on including extensions for expiring health care tax credits.

After weeks of negotiations and mounting pressure from both the public and federal employees, a group of Senate Democrats broke ranks earlier this week to support a revised spending package.

The Senate approved the measure Monday with the support of eight Democrats, and the House followed on Wednesday, sending the bill to President Trump’s desk for final approval.

While most House Democrats opposed the plan arguing it failed to address their core demand on health care party leaders secured a commitment from Senate Republicans for a separate vote on the expiring tax credits by mid-December.

But with only a short-term funding extension in place, lawmakers are already bracing for another potential fiscal battle before the end of January.
